Supporting the Competition

Tonight Jacek and I will go head to head in Burlypicks WHILE supporting each other's acts. That's right, he will sturdy me with a gentlemanly hand during my act and I will hand him props during his. It has been fun getting prepared for the show together, mending and creating costume pieces, practicing and giving each other tips. Now, let's see who's the best of the best!

In Casey's honor

As we are grieving, we will keep this short. Casey was on her way out on Monday, Memorial Day, and we rushed her to the vet to make sure nothing could be done. We decided on humane euthanasia as she was going but suffering greatly. We are missing her deeply. In the 19 days that we knew her, the 3 of us grew to love each other very deeply. We were glad we could give her so much love that she needed at the end of her life. We still feel her with us. We have even had some interesting hello's from her soon after her transition.
Thank you all for your support. We would do this all over again as there are so many animals out there that deserve love and care whether they are going to live 1 hour or 10 years.

Today we picked up a kitty that needed to be fostered and had been at Gailor Animal Hospital since March. His name is Percy and he has 3 legs. He had to have one amputated due to a very traumatic injury probably from a car. Shamrock Foundation will pay for anything he needs. He does have some medical issues that we need to watch out for and he has FIP. We have him in our room separate from the other cats. They will make no contact since there is a lot of controversy as to how FIP is transmitted. He is a very sweet kitty and talkative. He is strong and has no problem climbing up onto the bed to look out the window.

Casey layered in honeysuckle with a headstone
we dug into while making the grave.
We also got a call from Alley Cat Advocates today that Bruce Willis (Schrapnel) is ready to come home on Saturday. My mom can't wait to pick up her new baby!

We are taking down our GoFundMe today as we feel comfortable with what was donated plus recent soap sales and yard sale income. We appreciate all who contributed to the betterment of Casey's quality of life and the financial recovery of the vet expenses.

More Time

Since Casey has shown such spunk today and seems to be very alert with an appetite, we decided to take it a day at a time. We could hardly keep up with her this morning. I just watched "Charlie Bartlett" while she snuggled under the sheet with me. She has been on no meds today except for the small dose of Pepcid AC. I set a vet appt for her tomorrow afternoon to see their thoughts on her meds, etc. She seems much more spunky without them. But I am no expert at this. I feel a huge emotional hangover today. I didn't want to answer the door earlier but I did and a neighbor gave me $30 toward Casey's vet bill. That was really sweet.

I guess some days will be tougher than others for her and us. I am grateful she seems well today.
~Ember

So confusing

Casey is full of spunk since last night. She even climbed onto the bed which she has never done before. She spooned with us on the bed too. She used to hate being on the bed and always wanted down. She heard the birds before the sunrise and climbed onto the bed and into the window. Then she snuggled with Jacek for a good while. Then I got her and we spooned for a long time. She is very vocal and full of energy, exploring the house and getting along with the other cats. She used to hit and swat at them. I guess when you poop all over yourself, you start to give no fucks. She threw up everything she ate and had diarrhea. She used to not really mess on herself but she made a lot of messes last night. We think it was because of the morphine-like medicine we gave her. When that wore off she started throwing up and getting spunky. We have given her no meds yesterday and today besides that. Though I just gave her a bit of Pepcid AC. We would love for her to live longer. I guess she will have good days and bad days but probably not very many left. We are not sure what to do now. We are so confused.
She keeps climbing onto the bed to be near the window.
My aunt said that we don't have to put her down just because the vet thinks it would be ok. She had a cat with lymphoma that died 2 years after she was diagnosed but lost 8.5 lbs in 1.5 years. She knew it was time to put her down when she was throwing up blood and blood was in her stool too. I don't want it to ever get to that point for Casey. This is such an emotional roller coaster.
We are now thinking of keeping her a few days to see what goes on with her. Will keep you updated.

Saying Goodbye

Casey stayed overnight at Gailor with no improvement shown by this morning. We were super happy to see her and she was very expressive and lovey about seeing us too. We missed her throughout the night. Last night we started a GoFundMe since we knew we might be seeing a specialist and that the overnight hospitalization quote was between $300-500. This morning vet suggested that if we wanted to keep trying we take her to Blue Pearl to see a specialist because there was something they were just missing. Unsure if Shamrock would help us cover the bill or not, we headed to the specialist this morning as an emergency.

I offered her canned Wellness in the car and she seemed very hungry. We were hungry too and stopped through McD's drive through. Casey was meowing at Jacek very loudly while he at chicken nuggets. Thinking my food might be a bit healthier for her, I offered her grilled chicken and she didn't want any. She kept meowing at Jack and so we peeled the outer layer off a nugget and she ate a piece! We gave her a few bites and she devoured them. We didn't care what she ate as long as she ate because she is only 4.5 lbs.

Long story short, the vet at Blue Pearl said that after an ultrasound and some blood work it appears as though Casey has lymphoma all through her GI tract with a bleeding mass. She also has pancreatitis. She said it is unlikely that it is anything else but if we want them to get a thorough sample they would have to put her under anesthesia which she might not survive. If it is lymphoma, even with chemo treatment she could live another 6 months and just drag out her pain. Also, she appears to be a lot older than we thought. In her opinion, it was not a bad idea to euthanize her but she left the decision up to us. Jacek and I both teared up and so did the vet. We took a few minutes to really decide what we wanted to do.

We decided to bring her home for one more night of chicken, garden time and snuggles and give her everything she wants. She is chilling out in the backyard now after a very stressful day. Jacek and I are preparing a space for her to be buried in the backyard after we bring her home tomorrow. Blue Pearl gave us some low dosage morphine for her to reduce her pain for the next 24 hours.

I have literally spent nearly all my money with $1.71 left in my checking and 58 cents left in my savings. It was worth it to know. Tomorrow Jacek will pay for the euthanasia.  Not a fun thing to pay for.

For those who have donated to our GoFundMe to help save Casey, we are willing to refund the money as it has not been withdrawn yet. We will keep our GoFundMe up in case someone else is willing to donate to help us recover expenses. It seems like a morbid thing to ask and yet I have no shame about it. I will offer bigger gifts in return for donations. Basically I will offer rewards at cost or below to help with the financial recovery.

I have never seen Jacek cry but today I did. He is the best partner I could ever have. He has the hugest heart and shares equal passion for circus, kitties, art, traveling, thrift stores and gardening with me.

Casey Hospitalized

Casey has been very lethargic the past two days. We took her to the vet for possible fluids and probiotics but, she lost half a pound since Friday. She now weighs 4.5 lbs. They are keeping her overnight to get fluids in her and see what they can do to pep her up. They (Gailor Animal Hospital) thinks she needs a specialist because the medicines she was on were pepping her up and now she is on a downswing. They quoted us between $300-500 and we said we will figure it out. So, expect an update shortly with a GoFundMe for Casey, the itty bitty wonder kitty.

Yoga and shtuff

Time to rub some people! Tuesdays are massage therapy days. I may add another day of the week to earn more money for the tour bus fund.

Tonight we have yoga on the waterfront. We thought we would be doing yoga at home but it sure is easier to get motivated when there is a set time and a bunch of other people doing it. Plus, trying to do yoga at home with cats crawling under you... well, actually I am not complaining. It's kitty yoga snuggle time!

Star yoga snuggles

If you wanna try out yoga or continue your practice, there is $5 yoga (pretty gentle for all levels) at the Louisville Waterfront on Tuesdays at 7pm. It is just before sundown which is nice and the big heat envelope that happens around 5pm is gone. It is at the Brown Forman Amphitheater. Bring a yoga mat or towel, some water and wear some comfy clothes that you can move in all kinds of directions in.

What the hell is in the garden?

I could have sworn that I planted rosemary in a pot in the garden. I kept the package inside the pot so I would remember it was rosemary. The rosemary turned out to be oregano! What the heck??

Surprise Oregano

I have a lot of starters that I intend to sell when they get a bit bigger. I have dill, oregano, a few cilantro and a lot of peppers. I planted seeds from green peppers and poblanos that we didn't eat in time. Right now, I can't tell which peppers are which.
I am super excited about the lemongrass, lavender and rosemary we planted so that eventually I will have my own herbs to harvest for my homemade soaps.

My star shaped  all natural lemongrass soap called Happy Day!

Casey, the itty bitty wonder kitty had a very lethargic day today. She hardly ate anything and only pooped once. She didn't have any Flagyl today which I think helped her to not throw up. She was very fussy about taking her medicines too. I couldn't get her to take one of her blood thinners so I mixed it in her food. A lot of good that does if she is not eating. We are snuggling on her as much as possible and giving her the love. She was able to walk up 3 steps twice today on her own. That has me excited for her atrophied back legs to heal. She is gaining enough strength to fight me on taking the meds. She has caught on that we were hiding medicine in the chicken we were hand feeding her so at times we would have to put it in the back of her mouth. We can't do that now without getting our fingers chomped on. To keep her from stressing too much, we give her meds a little at a time and come back to the rest a little while later. Send her prayers for a speedy and thorough recovery. These lethargic days have us worried.

Casey snuggles.

I miss snuggling with the other kitties. We keep Casey in the bedroom with the door shut so the other cats don't stress her. I can tell my kitties miss the snugs too and are pretty stressed. It's hard to make all the babies happy at once.

We are planning a fundraiser for Shamrock Foundation with Drunk & Sailor for August or September. We will keep you updated!

Our upcoming appearances with Blue Moon Circus are:

May 29, Burlypicks Kentucky Regional Competition at Cure Lounge, Louisville, KY
June 5, W/Tinderbox Circus Sideshow at Cure Lounge, Louisville, KY
June 6, w/Bizarre Noir at Doom Room, Lafayette
We hope to see you at one of our events! <3

Rainy Day Blogger

Got a chance to see the ginger haired Bruce Willis (Schrapnel) yesterday at Alley Cat Advocates. He is in amazing high spirits and happy and shaved like a circus cat. He gave us lots of lovin and we will see him later this week. He's got a bit more healing to do before he goes to his new family farm. They shaved all of his injury spots and matted hair. They clipped his balls and his ear. He's completely fine with that. They need a little more time to stitch up his arm which the vet originally thought would heal on its own. Currently you can see the muscle so, they are gonna go ahead and give him a few stitches. All the other wounds have healed up perfectly. We called him Bruce Willis aka Schrapnel for obvious reasons- Bruce Willis gets his ass handed to him in every movie but he still wins in the end.

Casey went back to the vet Friday for a checkup. She is weighing over 5 lbs now. They took her off Amoxycillin which could have been contributing to the diarrhea. She started eating some Wellness wet food on her own but vomited quite a bit so we shall continue her favorite food- chicken. She still takes her other meds every day which kills us cuz she doesn't like em. She does like to go outside though and she meows a lot. She is super snuggly but not ready to be around other cats yet. We think she must have gotten stuck in someone's shed over the winter because she has no injuries or disease, just malnutrition and dehydration. The doc mentioned that she has two nodules in her abdomen that could either be cancer or simply swollen lymph nodes.

So, we found ourselves looking up a tree through a friend of a friend at a stuck kitty who had been up there 4 days. We recognized the cat immediately from a LOST craigslist ad from our neighborhood as we grabbed a 20 ft ladder. I climbed up to the top and coaxed her to me. When I got the chance, I grabbed her by the scruff and carefully back down. I handed her to Ember when I got close enough. We immediately got in touch with the owner who was grief stricken and missing this super beautiful cat.

ts

The greatest thing this week besides working in the garden and saving animals was a superb concert. The Pixies were in town at the Palace and we were owed two free tickets from a circus show over a year ago. We were awarded VIP seating right above our favorite band and danced our asses off to the best show ever!

Meanwhile we are working hard in the garden and saving and dreaming of our bus…

We are growing corn, tomatoes, several types of basil, lemongrass, beans and peas, raspberries and strawberries, carrots, dill, rosemary, lavender, sunflowers, eggplant, cucumbers, okra, peppers, onions, radishes, chives, cilantro, and more. Noms!
Oh.. and a weird Italian vegetable that's supposed to taste kinda like broccoli or cauliflower..

Stray kitties update

Casey, the itty bitty wonder kitty protested being in the garden the past few days but, today she roamed around and soaked up the sunshine for over an hour. Then she protested when I brought her in. She is very vocal! I was so happy to see her strut and wobble through the backyard. She even "watered" our plants with the liquid squirts... Luckily it wasn't directly on a plant. Her fecal results came back this morning as negative for parasites. This kitty is so blessed to have been an outside stray and be Leukemia and FIV free with no internal parasites. All of her fleas are finally gone and with some good bathing her coat is shiny and soft. She is on quite a few medicines that the vet said could cause diarrhea and vomiting. She threw up twice this morning and I am not sure if it is from the medicine or because she actually ate some dry food I offered her. Maybe both. She is just about the sweetest kitty. She talks to us all the time. She loves Jacek a lot- probably because he isn't  giving her yucky medicine. He makes sure he's not the only one giving her chicken so, she doesn't completely lean to one of us for lovinz. haha
She seems to be getting thicker in the middle now and not just her pot belly area. I am very hopeful for a full recovery with her. She is a tough broad! She still has weak back legs but exercised them quite a bit this morning. She was weak a few days ago but after the pet visit and getting an additional blood thinner and prednisolone, her appetite is fully back and she is drinking plenty of water.
Thank goodness for the donation of paper towels, bath towels and rags because those squirts don't always make it into the litter.

Bruce Willis, the ginger haired scrapper aka Schrapnel is being kept another week to make sure his wounds heal. They decided not to stitch his arm up since part of the wound is in a moving area. We get to pick him up this Saturday morning and I deliver him to my mom this Sunday at my Granny's where we meet for lunch. My mom lives in the country in Shepherdsville. Since Bruce prefers the outdoors and insists on being outside, he can roam around her acreage chasing mice and getting all the love he wants without competition from other kitties. I will help introduce him to her home since he is familiar with my face. He may need to be indoors for a little while during the healing process.

Although Jacek and I miss little Bruce, we were lucky it worked out this way to only have one rehabilitating kitty at our house at a time. It really does take up time and energy to nurse kitties back to health. Our 7 kitties will be happy when they can snuggle in our bed with us again but they are very patient and kind with the process. Dexter and Omen cry in the living room every morning for attention. There is no sleeping past 9:30am in this house.

Dexter, by the way, is the most hyper of our cats. That is just how he has always been. Since his buddy Hari died over a year ago, he has no kitties to keep up with his playfulness. So, I have stepped in and spent more time playing with him. We play tag across the house. I rub him vigorously and then run across the house. He chases me and lays down for more rubbing. Sometimes if he can catch me, he will grab at my legs while I run. He has become more bossy than usual with the other cats since he spent 9 days outside. When we are in the garden he howls at the door. But, he's grounded! Plus we have a real fat racoon that likes to visit all times of day and night to fight the slugs for cat food on the front porch.

Jacek is on a painting job and I don't really know what to do with myself today since we spent 9 days together hunting for Dexter. So far I spent time in the garden with kitty while I had coffee. I do have plans to meet with someone for a custom apron I will be making. I also have plans to meet with other people as well. Since I no longer work at the spa, I have more time to focus on circus and creative arts. But, it sure is hard deciding which thing to focus on! The house has become quite messy since all this kitty stuff so, I think I will start with that. I'd rather go for a bike ride though...

Couples who yoga together...

Jacek didn't think he would enjoy yoga in the park around a bunch of strangers but, he enjoyed it so much last week that we are going back this week. Yay! It is super relaxing and helping us stretch and get balanced for our crazy, zany circus and side show antics!

Thank you for the donations.

Thank you to friends and family who stepped in and donated items to take care of Casey, the itty bitty wonder kitty. Some made donations directly to Shamrock Foundation which is great! $20 was donated to us for Casey's care which was put on her vet bill at Gailor Animal Hospital today. For more info on Casey, please see the last post.

We are still waiting to hear back about Bruce Willis, the ginger haired scrapper. Alley Cat Advocates can be hard to get a hold of since it is run by volunteers who have day jobs. We are so grateful to them and very anxious to hear about his status. He has a home waiting for him in the country.

Look what Dexter started!

Yes, we are circus and sideshow freaks but, we also love dem kitties! on 4/28/15, our kitty Dexter escaped the backyard. I was outside in the garden with the kitties and went inside for a few minutes. I went to the backyard to call them in for dinner and Dexter was the only one who did not come back in. Jacek and I made fliers, visited animal clinics and pounds for 9 days while calling for him and combing the neighborhood all hours of the day. I posted on Louisville Lost & Found on Facebook along with Kentuckiana Lost & Found. 400 fliers were printed and nearly all were posted and hand delivered door to door. The entire neighborhood knew who Dexter was. All of facebook even knew who he was with over 150 shares. I was grieving so hard and in so much fear that he was trapped somewhere or someone would never return him that I hardly ate or slept. While getting out of the car one day to check Louisville Metro Animal Services again, I nearly passed out. I had to stop and sit down while a worker brought me water. Jacek held onto me while my heart spilled out and I cried with grief. It was terribly painful to look all the animals in the eye and search their faces to make sure they weren't Dexter. We visited Kentucky Human Society every day as well. While on the hunt, I realized just how deep and wide the problem of stray animals, lost and found pets are in Louisville, KY. The problem was overwhelming and I could not take it on all by myself. There are people who work for no one but for the good of helping others by matching lost and found pets all over Kentucky.
Jacek walked the neighborhood and posted flyers with me everyday. At first it felt that the stress would tear us apart as a couple but I knew I had to watch my mood if I wanted help with finding Dexter. The focus and singleness of purpose brought us closer together. This is the poster we had everywhere before finding him.

Along the way, I found this guy two streets over begging for food on someone's porch. I was calling for Dexter and this guy came running up to me. Though, I did not want to pet him and even wanted to shew him away because he wasn't Dexter, I bent down to pet him anyway. He had a fresh, deep bloody gash in his ear and puss dripping off an open wound on his leg. His hair was all matted up. Even though I had pet him a day or two before and knew of his matted hair, I didn't notice his wounds. When I saw this, I grabbed him by the scruff and picked him to take him home. He ate a lot of food immediately! I posted him on the lost and found facebook pages with no luck in finding his human. A lady DID however private message me with a more direct number to an Alley Cats Advocate volunteer. Alley Cats still has the guy now and is stitching him up. He was an unaltered male that was so beat up and happy we decided to call him Bruce Willis aka Schrapnel. In every movie Bruce Willis is in, he gets his ass handed to him and still wins. We thought it was appropriate. There is a huge cat in the neighborhood that beats up on the other outdoor kitties relentlessly. I am sure they have had a run-in or two together. We are awaiting his return and he will be homed on farmland with my mom since he insists on being outside. Here he will have no competition for food and get lots of loving.

A few days later while putting up flyers one street over around 10:30 in the morning, Jacek found this kitty in someone's driveway. I looked across the street and saw her bobbing in place while sitting in the hot hot sun. I went over and took one look at her knowing she could die and scooped her up in my arms. We took her home immediately. She was severely underweight and had cognitive issues. She hardly fought to get out of my arms and was too weak to push or jump away. She couldn't meow and was covered in fleas. We had tons of dry food but I didn't trust she could handle it. Even though it is not advised to give a cat tuna, it was the only wet food we had. She nearly ate the whole can of tuna and drank lots of water. She had one diarrhea accident on a towel and after that has almost always used the litter.
I posted her also on the lost and found boards. I called Shamrock to reach a message that said they were not helping with cats right now ( I guess they were overwhelmed) so, I had given up on them. After Michelle from Shamrock saw the photos of this little one, she gave me a more direct number to call. Shamrock Foundation helped us get Casey, the itty bitty wonder kitty in to be seen at Grimes Animal Clinic the following day on 5/8/2015. The vet said she was anemic, gave us a small dose of Advantage since the fleas were stealing her blood, gave us antibiotics just in case and a blood builder. He did not want to move around too much as she was super fragile. She weighed just over 4 lbs. Most healthy adult cats weigh at least 8-9 lbs. Imagine being half the weight you are supposed to weigh through being trapped and starved! Over the next few days we took her into the garden where she would explore and frolic when she had the energy. The past two days, however, she had been suddenly lethargic without frolic. She protested when we picked her up in the yard. Today while Jacek was on a house painting job, I began to worry about her health even more. She wasn't drinking water and eating far less of her favorite food (chicken). I couldn't get into Grimes soon enough so I called Shamrock and drove toward an emergency vet. Michelle called me back to reroute me to Gailor. Casey was super happy about this vet. I could tell she liked her because she responded to Dr. Renck's voice with meows and purrs. We got even more medicine and some AD canned food from the vet. She is luckily Feline Leukemia and FIV free. She is not spayed nor microchipped. We are waiting on parasite results from the fecal check. She is still anemic, white blood cell count is high and could POSSIBLY have kidney disease. Her bowels are inflamed and is dehydrated. The vet gave Casey subcutaneous rehydration. The kitty messed on herself on the way home so, I gave her a good bath and hung out with her in the garden to dry from wind and towel. She all of a sudden started shaking and meowing loudly. We took her back inside where she insisted we stay in her company and hold her tight. We just moved her out of the bathroom into our bedroom where there is natural light and to be around us. She will have a lengthy recovery and we are all routing for her. When she is healthy enough, Shamrock will help get her spayed.
Friends have donated money to us, paper towels and cat food. We could use some regular towels as well since that is what she likes to sleep on and has messed on a few times. We are running out of our own personal towels. We are washing these kitty mess towels and keeping for kitty time.

We have paid part of the vet bills that we could afford. If you would like to help with the vet costs that Shamrock is helping us cover, you can either pay on the bill directly at Gailor Animal Hospital (Louisville, KY), pay on Shamrock's Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Shamrock-Foundation/261789923833?fref=ts , pay on their website: www.shamrockpets.com or even mail in to Sharon Mayes 1446 Goddard Avenue 40204

Thanks to a tip from Michelle of Shamrock Foundation, we found our Dexter within five minutes of using her method. Remember, we searched and grieved for nine days. Then, following my gut as to where I kept thinking he would be and also basing it on a dream I had about Dexter, I went outside after dark with a flashlight and called for him. After dark with a flashlight- duh! The reflective eyes! After less than five minutes I found him stuck in between two fences rubbing and meowing at me. I had to grab him by the scruff through the chainlink fence up, up, and up to get him into my arms. He purred loudly and let me carry him all the way home... 3 doors down from our house. I kept getting the feeling at times that he had been watching me through the bushes while we called for him. Jacek didn't think he was far away either. We may have been right.
So, if you are ever missing your pet- flashlight at night and look where you have a feeling your pet will be!

This adventure has inspired us to do many things such as:

walking every day to save stray kitties
this blog
do more circus and sideshows to benefit animal rescuers
not argue about the small stuff
and a tour for the animals!
